Sustainability Initiatives
Photovoltaic Electric Production SCF Venice Campus
Energy
Energy conservation is prevalent throughout our campuses. Some of our principal efforts include:
-
Automated building controls for air conditioning and heat
-
Interior and exterior lighting being phased to energy efficient bulbs including LED. Expansion of motion sensor and automated controls on lighting
-
11 kilowatt photovoltaic array supplementing power at our Venice campus
-
Thermal energy storage for air conditioning at Lakewood Ranch campus
Green Cleaning
Green cleaning is standard practice and helps to reduce chemical exposure to both people and the environment. These practices include
-
Receptacle liners made partially from post consumer waste
-
Floor care systems that use 70% less water
-
Use of solvent & VOC free, reduced toxicity cleaners
Sustainable Landscaping /
Water Conservation
SCF uses native trees, shrubs and grasses in an effort to move toward lower maintenance and sustainable landscaping. SCF Bradenton campus uses reclaim water and untreated surface water for half of all irrigation. SCF Venice campus uses 100% untreated surface water to meet irrigation needs.
Hats off to Courtney Ruffner Grieneinsen
--We are moving to a more cooperative mode of organizing, a better strategy for sustainability.
Purchasing
SCF utilizes green procurement practices such as Energy Star appliances and purchasing of paper products that are partially composed of post consumer waste
Preferred parking spaces are available at the Lakewood Ranch campus for carpooling and Low Emission Vehicles (LEVs). Two electric car charging stations are also available at the Lakewood Ranch Campus

Sustainable Design New Campus Buildings
SCF has been awarded the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold Certification for our Medical Technology and Simulation Building at Lakewood Ranch. We also intend for all future new construction and major remodeling projects to meet LEED standards or equivalent. At this time (January 2016) the school is now using the Green Globe "certification" program. Green Globe will be a focus this term. It would be great to be able to explain, evaluate, compare and contrast this eco certification agency.
