I wish I had captured more student responses this summer.  This class was an excellent group.

Last ? On Syllabus quiz for the summer 2017 class:

Do you think that academic freedom is important in a setting like a community college?

Academic freedom is vital in an educational setting, such as a community college, to ensure that students are offered a variety of viewpoints.  Academic freedom encourages diverse thinking and challenges students to look at issues from a different perspective.  The role of instructors is to encourage students to consider other views, debate controversial topics in a safe setting, and develop essential critical thinking skills.  Overall, academic freedom creates well-rounded students, preparing them for the real world.

Do you think that academic freedom is important in a setting like a community college?

Your Answer:

I do believe that academic freedom is very important in any setting. People should be able to voice their opinions, and speak their minds on a topic. Everyone feels differently about things, so in a setting like a community college it could be used to start conversation, or debate.

The closest nuclear power plant to the SCF Venice campus is within the Crystal River Energy Complex. It is the Crystal River 3 plant (CR-3).

The Crystal River Energy Complex was built in the 60’s by FPC. It was eventually sold to Progress Energy, who eventually merged with Duke Energy, so the plant is owned by Duke Energy. CR-3 was licensed tooperate in December 1976 and went offline in September 2009. The rest of the Crystal River EnergyComplex is fossil-fuel burning.

In February 2013, Duke Energy announced that Crystal River 3 would be permanently shut down. CR-3 is currently being decommissioned and is transitioning to SAFSTOR condition.

CR-3 outputs 0 electricity, as it is decommissioned. The rest of the energy complex generates 3140megawatts seasonally (summer).

I remember when Duke Energy announced CR-3 would be permanently shut down. I was happy with the decision, as I find the Crystal River / Homosassa are to be the most beautiful (and my favorite) place in Florida. It is unfortunate, however, that the large fossil-fuel plant is still right on the coast.

by Florida Power & Light, Florida Municipal Power Agency (8.81%), and the Orlando Utilities Commission

(6.08%). Its can generate about 12,000 megawatts of energy annually.

A/I quiz comments BCN2046

This is an open space for you to add any additional comments/thoughts about the class and the material. Please try to write at least one sentence, thanks.

Your Answer:

  1. I personally would not change anything from the class. This is the first time that I really felt that a professor cares about the student and cares about what she teaches and wants to make a difference on the student which I believe everyone in the class can agree.

  2. I think this class was one of the most eye opening class that I have ever taken. I have been all around the world and this class showed me how even with the most basic items third world countries could be changed.

  3. Overall I thought this class was very helpful and actually teaches you a lot of real/relevant information that you should know versus other online courses. Great Teacher helped too.

Sustainable SCF, is committed to encouraging and facilitating the collaborative efforts of faculty, students, and staff to generate knowledge, acquire skills, develop values, and initiate practices that contribute to a sustainable, high quality of life on campus and surrounding community.
